Memorial Day

May 27

For over 155 years, we have honored those who sacrificed in service to our country. Memorial Day is a day to reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedoms.

A few ways to celebrate in honor of these fallen heroes include:

  • Participate in or attend Memorial Day Parades and Ceremonies
  • Visit cemeteries and memorials to pay respects to their fallen, perhaps leaving flowers or flags
  • Volunteer or donate to a veterans’ organization
  • Visit with Gold Star families and share stories and memories
  • Observe a moment of silence
  • Fly the flag

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Written during the First World War by physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae.
